I often find myself traveling across Texas. I visit family, meet friends, and conduct business throughout the state, always finding comfort in a glass of sweet tea and a plate of Tex-Mex, which I consider the best food in America.
On this trip, I arrive in Dallas a few days before I speak at Frequent Traveler University about the best domestic airline redemptions. It is the perfect chance to spend time with my dad, like I did during a stay at the Hyatt Regency Seattle, and to catch up with my closest college friends over dinner.
Since I have a few days before I need to move to the conference hotel, I choose to stay in downtown Dallas at the Thompson Dallas by Hyatt. The Thompson brand continues to impress me after great experiences at the Thompson Nashville and Thompson Washington D.C.
From the elegant design of the rooms to the exceptional dining options, my dad and I truly enjoy our stay. I already plan to return on a future trip, ideally when the weather is warmer, to relax by the rooftop pool and explore more of downtown Dallas under the Texas sun.
Hotel Award Booking (7/10)
The Thompson Dallas by Hyatt currently falls as a Category 6 property in the World of Hyatt program (as of 2025). Award nights range from 21,000 points on off-peak dates to 29,000 points during peak times, with 25,000 points as the standard rate.
When I book my stay, the cash rate for the room sits around $450 per night, which makes redeeming points a good value for this particular trip. However, instead of using points, I decide to redeem a Category 1 – 7 Free Night Award that is about to expire.

This allows me to save my World of Hyatt points for a future trip.
Since the standard award rate during my stay is 25,000 points per night, I find this to be an excellent use of the certificate. The redemption feels even more worthwhile given the hotel location and upscale design.
Unfortunately, because I use a Free Night Award (FNA), I am unable to apply a Suite Upgrade Award (SUA). That is perfectly fine, since there are no suites with two beds available during my stay anyway.
Hotel Location And Public Transportation (8/10)

The Thompson Dallas by Hyatt sits in the heart of downtown Dallas, surrounded by some of the top city attractions. From the hotel, I can easily walk to the Sixth Floor Museum, where President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, as well as the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum and the Dallas World Aquarium, one of my personal favorites in the city.
The hotel is part of The National, a 51-story luxury mixed-use development that opened in 2020 after a full renovation. The Thompson occupies the first 20 floors of the building, while the remaining floors include upscale apartments and several dining options.
If I want to explore Dallas proper, there is hardly a better location. Most downtown attractions are within walking distance. However, like much of Texas, the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex is very spread out, so a car is still helpful for reaching areas beyond downtown.
For reference, the hotel address is:
205 N Akard Street
Dallas, TX 75201
Parking At The Thompson Dallas
Valet parking is available for $65 per night plus tax, with full in-and-out privileges. As a World of Hyatt Globalist, I receive complimentary valet parking during my award stay, which is a great benefit.
There is no self-parking available at the hotel.
One small frustration is the electronic tipping option, which includes an unexpected $3.15 convenience fee not displayed until payment. It feels unnecessary for such a minor transaction.
There are a few public parking lots nearby, so if you are not a Globalist, I recommend checking platforms like SpotHero for cheaper parking options.
Public Transportation
Because Texas cities are generally spread out, public transportation in Dallas can be limited. However, the DART light rail system connects Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) directly to downtown Dallas, with a station just a few blocks from the hotel.
Even though DART offers a convenient and affordable option, I still prefer to rent a car during my stay. This gives me more freedom to explore different neighborhoods, and it helps avoid the high cost of rideshares, which can add up quickly.
Vibe And Atmosphere (9/10)

The Thompson Dallas by Hyatt perfectly captures what I would describe as refined modern Texan style. From the polished granite and warm wood tones to the iron accents and sleek furniture, the entire property blends contemporary design with classic Texas charm.
When I first walk into the lobby, I am immediately struck by the breathtaking hotel entrance walkway that leads to the front desk. Beautiful art lines the walls, and stylish seating areas sit on each side of the aisle, inviting guests to relax.
Even though the hotel feels cutting-edge and modern, I notice subtle Texas-inspired touches everywhere, like cowhides and leather furnishings, that add warmth and authenticity to the space.
The same thoughtful design continues into the guest rooms, where each detail feels intentional. The furniture and decor create a sense of understated luxury while staying true to their Texas roots. Every element, from the materials used to the layout of the room, feels consistent with the overall theme of modern elegance with a Texan twist.
When I think about modern Texas hospitality, the Thompson Dallas is exactly what comes to mind. It balances sophistication, style, and local identity in a way few hotels achieve.
Hotel Check-In (7/10)
After walking through the gorgeous lobby at the Thompson Dallas by Hyatt, my dad and I arrive at the check-in desk around 9 PM, ready to settle in quickly before finding a late-night bite to eat.
The front desk agent greets me with a warm smile and immediately sets the tone for the stay. She takes my ID and credit card, thanks me for being a World of Hyatt Globalist, and clearly explains the benefits that come with my status.
The process feels smooth and personal, which is exactly what I hope for at a luxury hotel in Dallas.
Once everything is set, she hands me two room keys and personally walks us to the elevators. Because the property includes both hotel and apartment sections, there are two separate elevator banks, each requiring a room key for access.
She scans us in and presses the button for the 20th floor, where our room is located.
When we step off the elevator, I notice the beautiful decor surrounding the elevator lobby, which carries the same refined modern Texan feel seen throughout the hotel. We follow the hallway to the end and arrive at our Two Queen Bed Room, number 2009.
Two Queen Beds – Living Space And Bedroom (8/10)
I absolutely love this room at the Thompson Dallas by Hyatt. From the thoughtful design and modern touches to the skyline views and incredibly comfortable beds, it feels like the perfect combination of style and comfort.
Living Space
When I first enter the room, I walk down a long entryway with a full-length mirror on my left and the bathroom on my right. A few steps farther, I find the closet, stocked with all the essentials: robes, hangers, a safe, an iron, and enough space to store a carry-on or checked bag.

Next to the closet sits the minibar, which includes a nice selection of spirits and barware, including a wine decanter – a thoughtful touch for anyone who enjoys a glass of red wine after a long day.

Moving farther into the room, I pass the flat-screen TV, where a small welcome amenity of water and almonds waits for me, before reaching the work desk. This is also where I find the illy coffeemaker, which immediately wins me over.

The setup includes extra bottles of water and several conveniently placed power outlets. The layout feels well-designed, and I have no problem getting work done the next morning before heading out.

At the far end of the room, large floor-to-ceiling windows frame a wide view of the Dallas skyline. While the view is not the most dramatic, the perspective from the 20th floor allows me to see miles into the Texas landscape.

As the saying goes, everything truly is bigger in Texas!
Bedroom
On the right side of the room are the two queen beds, which turn out to be incredibly comfortable. My dad and I both sleep soundly, and I find these beds to be among the best I have experienced in any hotel. The mattresses are soft without being too plush, and the bedding is light, breathable, and perfectly cozy.

Each bed has its own bedside table with multiple power outlets, making it easy to charge phones or devices overnight. As I unwind and watch a few YouTube videos before falling asleep, I appreciate the balance of comfort and convenience in the room.
This Two Queen Bed room at Thompson Dallas ranks as one of the most comfortable hotel rooms I have stayed in within the United States. From the design and amenities to the sleep quality, everything feels intentional and elevated – exactly what I expect from a luxury hotel in downtown Dallas.
Two Queen Bed – Bathroom (8/10)
The bathroom in my Two Queen Bed room at the Thompson Dallas by Hyatt sits just to the right as soon as I enter the room. At first, the layout feels a bit unusual because the space is narrow, but it surprisingly works quite well.
When I step inside, I find a single sink vanity with plenty of counter space for both my dad and me to unpack our toiletries without crowding each other. A large makeup mirror sits above the sink, which is perfect for anyone getting ready for a night out in downtown Dallas.

Turning right from the vanity, I walk down a long hallway-style layout that features the shower on the right and a separate toilet area at the very end.

The shower is impressively large, with excellent water pressure and precise temperature control. I particularly appreciate the design detail that allows me to adjust the water temperature without stepping in and getting wet first.

The shower includes bulk-size Bowmakers by D.S. & Durga products, which align with the Thompson Hotesl brand’s upscale and sustainable standard. The fragrance is rich but clean, adding to the overall spa-like experience.

At the end of the hallway sits the toilet, enclosed by a glass door.

My only real complaint about this bathroom is that design choice – it feels a bit awkward and impractical, especially when sharing the space.
Hotel Amenities And Facilities (8/10)
The Thompson Dallas by Hyatt offers a wide range of amenities that make it a standout among luxury hotels in downtown Dallas. From the spa and salon to the rooftop pool and state-of-the-art gym, the property feels designed for both relaxation and wellness.
Spa And Salon
Although I do not use the spa or salon during my stay, they appear to offer a full menu of treatments and experiences. Access to the spa facilities is available with a booked treatment or through a day pass (offered only on weekdays).

Amenities include an infrared sauna, steam room, steam shower, and well-equipped locker rooms. Guests can also enjoy an outdoor deck featuring hot and cold plunge pools and multiple relaxation areas.
It looks like an excellent place to unwind after a long day of exploring Dallas or before heading to dinner at one of the hotel restaurants.
The Pool
Located on the ninth floor, the rooftop pool at Thompson Dallas is stunning and perfectly suited for relaxing with friends. While it might not be the most kid-friendly setup, families are still welcome to enjoy the space.

Cabanas line the outer edge of the pool deck, and plenty of loungers – including several placed directly in the water – create a fun and social atmosphere. There is also a full bar with poolside service, adding to the resort-style experience.

Unfortunately, rain keeps me from using the pool during my stay, but I can easily imagine how great it must be on a warm Texas afternoon.
I do hear that there is a hot tub, though I am unable to find it despite a determined search!
The Gym
The fitness center at Thompson Dallas may be the most impressive hotel gym I have ever used. It shares space with the apartment complex, which likely explains its size and high-end setup.
Upon entering, I find a full range of cardio equipment on the left, including stair steppers, a ski machine, ellipticals, Peloton bikes, and a rower. To the right, there is a collection of bodyweight equipment, such as a sit-up bench and a pull-up and tricep dip station.

Deeper into the gym, I discover a complete dumbbell rack and two barbell systems. While there are no safety bars and the barbells may not suit heavy lifters using more than two 45-pound plates, the setup still works well for most workouts.

At the far end of the facility are several weight machines and a dedicated personal training area, including Pilates equipment. Just outside, there is a workout lawn, ideal for yoga, stretching, or morning meditation under the Texas sun.

After a great workout, I leave impressed by how extensive and well-maintained this gym is. It feels like a true fitness club rather than a typical hotel gym.
Breakfast (7/10)

Breakfast at the Thompson Dallas by Hyatt takes place at the main hotel restaurant, The Little Daisy.
As a World of Hyatt Globalist, I receive my breakfast as part of my elite benefits. Although I cannot recall the exact dollar amount covered, the total for both my dad and me is fully comped, which makes the experience even better.
After being seated, our server greets us warmly and takes our order. I start with a cup of coffee with cream, which is refilled promptly throughout the meal.
For my main dish, I choose the shakshuka with eggs and toasted sourdough, along with a side of bacon. The portion is not overly large, but it is perfectly satisfying, and the flavors are excellent.

The service at The Little Daisy is quick, friendly, and attentive – exactly what I want for breakfast so I can enjoy my meal and still get on with my day. When the check arrives, I charge it to the room, and as expected, the charges never appear on my final bill thanks to my World of Hyatt Globalist benefit.
TPA Pro Tip: One of my favorite aspects of this setup is the extended breakfast service, which runs from 7 AM to 2 PM. Because the restaurant serves the full brunch menu during those hours, I could easily use the Globalist breakfast benefit for a relaxed brunch or early lunch if I prefer.
On-Site Dining (N/A)
In addition to The Little Daisy, the Thompson Dallas by Hyatt features several excellent on-site dining options, each offering a unique experience and atmosphere. While I do not have the chance to try them during my stay, they all look like great places to enjoy a meal or cocktail with friends.
Dining options at Thompson Dallas include:
- Catbird (10th Floor): A vibrant restaurant and lounge offering happy hour and late-night bites, with live music midweek and a DJ on weekends.
- Monarch (49th Floor): A wood-fired modern Italian restaurant featuring handmade pasta, steak, and seafood, paired with panoramic Dallas skyline views.
- Kessaku (50th Floor): A sushi and cocktail lounge with an upscale, intimate setting and some of the best views in the city.
Note: Monarch and Kessaku are independently owned and cannot be charged to the room.
Staff And Service (7/10)
During my stay at the Thompson Dallas by Hyatt, I do not have many direct interactions with the staff, but every one of them is pleasant and professional. From check-in to check-out, I feel well taken care of, and the service consistently reflects the standard expected at a luxury hotel in downtown Dallas.
Thompson Dallas Valet Team
I want to give a special shoutout to the valet team at the Thompson Dallas. They go above and beyond in every way. When my dad and I ask for local dining suggestions, they enthusiastically recommend a nearby Tex-Mex restaurant within walking distance – a perfect choice for our first night in the city.
When it comes time to retrieve our car, the team impresses me even more.
In most hotels across the United States, valet service can take 10 to 15 minutes, but at the Thompson, my car arrives in under five minutes, even with heavy rain coming down.
The valet attendants also load our bags quickly and with care. Their attention to detail and proactive service truly stand out and leave a lasting impression.
World of Hyatt Status & Benefits (7/10)
The Thompson Dallas by Hyatt does an excellent job recognizing my World of Hyatt Globalist status. From the moment I check in, it is clear that elite members are valued and well cared for.
Every benefit tied to my Globalist tier is acknowledged proactively, without me ever needing to ask – a gesture that truly stands out as a frequent Hyatt guest.
Globalist Benefits
Here is a breakdown of the elite perks I enjoy during my stay:
- Complimentary Breakfast: I receive breakfast at The Little Daisy, the main hotel restaurant. Although I cannot recall the exact spending limit, both my dad and I enjoy full meals without any charges appearing on our bill.
- Complimentary Suite Upgrade: We decide not to request a suite for this stay, but the front desk agent tells me that a suite upgrade would have been available if there had been a room with two beds.
- Free Parking: As a Globalist on an award stay, I receive complimentary valet parking, and the charge never appears on my bill.
- Welcome Amenity: Although not an official Globalist perk, I find a bag of almonds and a bottle of water in my room – a small but thoughtful touch that adds to the warm experience.
Every aspect of my stay reinforces why I remain loyal to Hyatt.
The Globalist benefits at Thompson Dallas feel genuine, consistent, and valuable. It is clear that the hotel staff not only understands the program but takes pride in delivering the experience that Hyatt promises.
Stays like this remind me why World of Hyatt continues to be my preferred loyalty program for both business and leisure travel.
Final Thoughts
I would confidently say that the Thompson Dallas by Hyatt ranks among the best Hyatt hotels in the United States within the upper-upscale category. While it does not aim to be a Park Hyatt, it easily stands out for its attention to detail, high-quality dining program, and professional, friendly service.
The guest rooms are beautifully designed, comfortable, and functional, offering both style and practicality. The amenities, including the ninth-floor pool, world-class gym, and inviting restaurant spaces, all contribute to the hotel’s elevated atmosphere.
My Globalist benefits are recognized seamlessly, which makes me feel genuinely valued as a loyal guest.
Of course, there are small areas for improvement. The gym could benefit from safety bars for the barbell rack, and the electronic valet tipping “convenience fee” feels unnecessary. Still, these are minor details that do not detract from what is otherwise a fantastic stay.
The Thompson Dallas provides the perfect escape from the busy Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex while keeping me close to the energy and culture of the city. It is a property that combines sophistication and Texan warmth in equal measure.
I fully recommend staying here – whether for business, a weekend getaway, or a points redemption through the World of Hyatt program.
I cannot wait to return to the Thompson Dallas, enjoy the sunshine by the pool, and experience once again what makes this hotel such a standout property in the Hyatt portfolio.
