Austin-Bergstrom International Airport [AUS] - Ultimate Terminal Guide

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) is the primary gateway to Central Texas, connecting millions of passengers each year to destinations across the United States and around the world.

Located just 7 miles from downtown Austin, the airport welcomed more than 21 million travelers in 2024, making it one of the fastest-growing airports in the nation. Known for its welcoming atmosphere and creative spirit, AUS perfectly captures the character of the Texas capital it serves.

Spanning roughly 4,200 acres, Austin-Bergstrom is a key hub for Southwest Airlines and an important base for Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, and United Airlines.

AUS features two distinct terminals, each designed for a specific set of travelers.

The Barbara Jordan Terminal is the primary facility, home to most airlines as well as three premium lounges, a wide range of restaurants, and locally inspired shops. The South Terminal, used by Allegiant Air and Frontier Airlines, provides a smaller, more relaxed travel experience with outdoor seating and a laid-back Austin feel.

The airport continues to grow through its multi-year Journey With AUS expansion program, which adds new gates, upgraded concourses, and a state-of-the-art parking garage to improve passenger flow and convenience.

Whether you are departing for a business trip, heading to one of the famous city festivals, or connecting to an international destination, AUS makes every journey smooth, modern, and unmistakably Texan.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) is the primary air hub for Central Texas and a vital part of the growing regional economy.

Located just 7 miles southeast of downtown Austin, the airport connects the state capital to more than 85 domestic and international destinations. With its balance of convenience, local charm, and forward-thinking design, AUS has quickly become one of the most traveler-friendly mid-sized airports in the United States.

Opened in 1999 on the former site of Bergstrom Air Force Base, AUS was built to reflect the creative and welcoming spirit of Austin. The airport has expanded steadily over the past two decades, keeping pace with the rapid city growth in business, technology, and tourism.

In 2024, AUS served more than 21 million passengers – a record number that highlights the rise of Austin as a global destination.

The Barbara Jordan Terminal, named after the pioneering Texas congresswoman, handles nearly all commercial flights and houses most airport amenities, including three airline lounges, dozens of restaurants, and rotating art and music programs that celebrate Austin’s culture.

The smaller South Terminal serves Allegiant Air and Frontier Airlines, providing a relaxed, open-air experience that feels closer to a boutique airport than a major transit hub.

Currently, the airport is undergoing its largest transformation yet through the Journey With AUS expansion program – a long-term initiative that will add new gates, modernize the Barbara Jordan Terminal, and create additional parking and roadway capacity.

Navigating AUS: Terminals And Concourses

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) is organized around two passenger terminals: the Barbara Jordan Terminal, which handles the vast majority of commercial flights, and the South Terminal, which serves only Allegiant Air and Frontier Airlines.

Unlike large U.S. hub airports that rely on trams or trains to move between areas, AUS is compact and easy to navigate. Each terminal operates independently, with its own check-in counters, security checkpoints, and boarding gates.

Because the two terminals are not connected airside or landside, travelers should go directly to the correct terminal for their airline rather than attempting to transfer after arrival.

Passengers connecting between airlines that use different terminals must exit security, collect their baggage, and take the complimentary inter-terminal shuttle, which runs when flights are operating.
