Amex Centurion Lounge DCA Review

Visiting an airport lounge is one of my favorite ways to begin any trip – when time allows. This is because airport lounges offer a calm space to relax, enjoy a meal, and ease into the travel mindset before boarding a flight.

Credit card companies are now opening co-branded airport lounges, a recent development that has transformed the premium travel experience. American Express is the pioneer in this space with its Centurion Lounge network, setting the original benchmark for quality and service.

However, over the past few years, Capital One and Chase have entered the market in a big way with their Capital One Lounges and Chase Sapphire Lounges, and industry news suggests Citi may join soon as well. With so many new options, travelers like me and you benefit the most, since competition is driving higher standards, better food, and more impressive lounge designs across all brands.

On this trip, I visit the brand-new Amex Centurion Lounge at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) before a short morning flight to Boston Logan (BOS). After recently upgrading my American Express® Gold Card to the American Express Platinum Card®, I finally have access to this exclusive space.

The Amex Centurion Lounge DCA opened in 2024, bringing the Centurion Lounge experience to the Washington, D.C. area for the first time. I am curious to see how this new lounge compares to other locations in the network, which have sometimes struggled with overcrowding and a noticeable decline in food quality.

American Express is investing heavily in upgrading and expanding its Centurion Lounge network, and this new DCA location feels like an opportunity to see those improvements firsthand. My expectations are moderate as I walk in, but I am hopeful that this refreshed approach delivers a better experience for travelers.

Amex Centurion Lounge Location And Access (8/10)

The American Express Centurion Lounge DCA is located just behind security in Terminal 2 of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), in the main corridor known as National Hall. This terminal serves nearly all airlines except Southwest Airlines, Air Canada, and Frontier Airlines.

There are two security checkpoints in Terminal 2, the North and South Security Checkpoints. The Amex Centurion Lounge sits just to the right after exiting the South Security Checkpoint, near the Delta Air Lines check-in area. Travelers entering through the North Security Checkpoint can reach the lounge by turning right and walking about seven to eight minutes down National Hall.

As I make my way down National Hall, I easily spot the Centurion Lounge on the right. It is hard to miss, and since no gate in this terminal is more than a 15-minute walk away, the location is extremely convenient for nearly every traveler.

The entrance is modern and stylish, setting the tone for the experience ahead. With my luggage in hand, I turn right inside the doorway and take the elevator up to the second level, where the lounge check-in desk is located.

Lounge Hours

The DCA Centurion Lounge operates daily from 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM, except on Saturdays, when it closes at 7:00 PM. These hours cover most long-haul and early-morning departures, making it easy to visit before almost any flight.

Access And Entry Requirements

Entry to the Amex Centurion Lounge DCA is available to eligible American Express cardholders under the following categories:

  • American Express Platinum Card® – complimentary entry
  • The Business Platinum Card® from American Express – complimentary entry
  • American Express Centurion Card – complimentary entry for the cardholder plus two guests
  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card – complimentary entry only when flying Delta Air Lines
  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card – complimentary entry only when flying Delta Air Lines

Those holding the American Express Platinum Card® and the Business Platinum Card® from American Express can also bring in two guests, but only after spending $75,000 in a year.

Check-In Experience (8/10)

The Amex Centurion Lounge DCA has a well-known reputation for being a victim of its own success. At many locations, guests often face long waits to get inside, sometimes upward of an hour. Fortunately, my early arrival at 5:15 AM makes all the difference.

There is no line, no crowd, and the check-in process is smooth and seamless from the moment I step inside.

Reception And First Impressions

As I exit the elevator, I am greeted by a single Centurion Lounge staff member at the reception desk, who welcomes me with a warm smile. Even this early in the morning, I notice that there is a roped-off queue area nearby, clearly set up to manage the heavier crowds that form during peak travel hours.

After a quick scan of my boarding pass and American Express Platinum Card®, my access is confirmed, and I am welcomed into the lounge. The entire process takes less than a minute, setting a positive tone for my visit, and I am welcomed into the main lobby.

Given the history of overcrowding at Amex Centurion Lounges in other cities, this calm and efficient check-in experience at the Centurion Lounge DCA feels like a refreshing start to the day.

Lounge Layout And Seating (9/10)

The Amex Centurion Lounge DCA spans about 12,000 square feet, making it one of the largest lounges in the entire airport. The size immediately stands out, but what impresses me most is the thoughtful zone-based layout that the designer has created.

A long central hallway runs the full length of the lounge, overlooking the terminal below. This corridor connects all major areas of the space and includes access to the restrooms.

The width of this hallway deserves special mention, since it allows travelers to move in both directions comfortably while others relax in nearby seating. It is a smart, efficient use of space that enhances the overall flow of the lounge.

Relaxation, Dining, And Social Zones

Just past the entrance, I step into the main dining room, which features both a buffet and a bar. This is easily the largest and liveliest room in the entire lounge.

The buffet station lines the back wall, offering a wide variety of breakfast and snack options, while the bar stretches across the right side of the space with plenty of counter seating and dining tables.

On the left side, a beverage station offers four automatic coffee machines, drip coffee, tea, juice, and cold brew.

In the back left corner of the dining room is a small, semi-private hallway reserved for American Express Centurion Card holders. If I were one of those guests, I might feel a bit underwhelmed, since the space is quite compact and has only one table that can seat more than two people.

Continuing down the main corridor, I reach another quiet sitting area at the far end of the lounge. This becomes my favorite place to spend time, as it is perfect for working or relaxing before a flight.

Here, I find a mix of tables, soft chairs, and a work area complete with a printer and a television playing sports highlights. This section also includes a phone booth, a meeting room, and a multi-purpose room, which seem ideal for private calls or small meetings.

Grab-And-Go, Coffee, And Power Access

Throughout the lounge, there are several grab-and-go stations stocked with coffee, tea, fruit, and light packaged snacks for guests who prefer something quick rather than a full meal.

Power outlets are available in many seating areas, but not all. Unfortunately, a noticeable number of seats lack access to plugs or charging ports, which feels like a missed opportunity in an otherwise well-designed space.

I hope American Express improves this in future lounge updates.

Amex Centurion Lounge Food And Beverage (6/10)

When the American Express Centurion Lounges first opened, they completely redefined what travelers could expect from airport lounge dining. High-quality, chef-inspired menus replaced the usual snacks and packaged meals found in most credit card lounges.

Over time, though, overcrowding and budget adjustments across the network have lowered the overall food quality, and the Amex Centurion Lounge DCA unfortunately reflects that trend.

Is it the best lounge food I have ever had?

No.

It is not even the best food in the airport – that title goes to the Capital One Landing

Still, the food here is perfectly edible and works well for travelers looking for a quick, comfortable meal before their flight.

The Craft Cocktail Bar

Since I visit the Centurion Lounge DCA early in the morning before my 7:00 AM flight, the cocktail bar is not yet open. However, I notice a locally inspired cocktail menu displayed behind the bar, which features a mix of regional spirits and creative drinks unique to the D.C. area.

I make a mental note to return later in the day to try one of these cocktails, as it seems like a highlight worth exploring on my next visit.

The Hot And Cold Buffet

When I arrive around 5:15 AM, the hot buffet is not yet available, since hot dishes are not served until 6:00 AM. Until then, guests can enjoy a simple continental breakfast that includes cut fruit, pastries, and yogurt.

At 6:00 AM sharp, the staff begins setting out the hot breakfast options, and travelers quickly line up to grab a plate. I fill mine with a mix of scrambled eggs, sausage, tater tots, pancakes, grits casserole, and pastries.

The food is fresh and filling, but not exceptional. Compared to the elevated offerings at the Capital One Landing, the difference in quality is noticeable. Still, for a complimentary meal inside an airport, it does the job.

I am curious to see how the Centurion Lounge DCA food changes later in the day during lunch or dinner service. Given how quickly the buffet line fills up, I imagine that popular dishes disappear fast during peak hours.

Dietary Accommodations

While buffet service can make dietary accommodations challenging, the Amex Centurion Lounge DCA does a good job of labeling allergens and ingredients on display cards next to each dish.

This makes it easier for guests with dietary restrictions to make informed choices.

Amex Centurion Lounge Amenities (6/10)

Given the size of the Amex Centurion Lounge DCA and the mostly regional flights operating out of Reagan National Airport, I do not expect a long list of high-end amenities – and that expectation turns out to be accurate.

The lounge covers the basics well, but it does not go far beyond what most premium domestic lounges already offer.

Fast And Reliable Wi-Fi

The Wi-Fi is complimentary, stable, and fast enough for most travelers’ needs. I have no issues browsing the web, answering emails, or sending Slack messages early in the morning.

Considering that the lounge includes both a phone room and a meeting room, I imagine the connection is strong enough to support video calls as well. Although I do not run a formal speed test, the network stays consistent throughout my stay, which makes it easy to get work done before boarding.

Clean Restrooms

The restrooms are located along the main hallway that runs the length of the lounge. Upon entering, I immediately notice how clean and well-maintained they are, which is one of the most important features for any airport lounge.

Since it is still early in the day, the cleanliness level is exceptional, though I wonder how well it holds up during peak hours.

Each stall is designed as a private room, which adds a sense of comfort and privacy. I am genuinely thankful to use a restroom inside the lounge rather than venturing out into the crowded terminal.

What Is Missing?

While the Centurion Lounge DCA amenities meet the basic expectations for a premium domestic lounge, a few missing features prevent it from matching the competition:

  • No Barista-Made Coffee: Only automatic coffee machines are available. The Capital One Landing nearby offers a full barista station, and I wish American Express would provide a similar option here.
  • Limited Power Outlets: Power access is inconsistent, and many seats lack outlets. Finding a charging spot could be a challenge during busy hours.
  • No Dedicated Nursing Room: Although there are several private rooms for meetings or calls, there is no designated space for nursing mothers, which I now expect in any new-build lounge.

Adding these features would bring the Amex Centurion Lounge DCA closer to the luxury standard set by its competitors and significantly improve the overall guest experience.

Lounge Cleanliness And Ambiance (9/10)

When I arrive at the Amex Centurion Lounge DCA around 5:15 AM, the doors have just opened for the day. The entire lounge is absolutely spotless, even in areas that usually show wear quickly, such as the buffet, bar, and restrooms.

The cleanliness immediately sets a positive tone and creates an inviting environment to start the morning.

Constant Upkeep And Attention To Detail

Throughout my visit, I do not find a single surface that appears unclean or unattended. Even as guests begin to arrive, staff members are proactive about tidying up, clearing plates, and wiping down tables.

Although I visit during the early hours, it is clear that cleanliness and upkeep are taken seriously here. Every area feels freshly maintained, which adds to the sense of calm and order that defines the Centurion Lounge experience.

Relaxing Lighting And Modern Design

The American Express Centurion Lounges are known for reflecting the personality of their host cities, and the DCA lounge is no exception. From elegant furniture to artwork celebrating Washington, D.C., every design detail feels intentional and connected to the local culture.

The lighting is soft and warm, creating a peaceful atmosphere that makes it easy to unwind before a flight.

One of my favorite parts of the Centurion Lounge DCA is the thoughtful interior design. The combination of textures, colors, and locally inspired art gives the space a sophisticated yet comfortable feel.

I find myself admiring the artwork for several minutes, appreciating how it captures the history and character of the capital city. The design makes it effortless to relax before boarding my flight to Boston.

Crowd Levels And Comfort (8/10)

When I enter the Amex Centurion Lounge DCA on this quiet weekday morning, there are only about 30 people inside. The space feels calm and relaxed, with plenty of available seating throughout the dining area and work zones.

I know that this lounge tends to get crowded during peak travel times, but in these early hours (i.e. before 8:00 AM), it feels like a peaceful retreat from the busy terminal outside.

When the lounge is not crowded, it is easy to unwind before a flight. The combination of soft lighting, comfortable furniture, and quiet atmosphere makes it one of the most relaxing lounges at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)

I would rank it among the top spots in the airport for comfort – right alongside the American Airlines Admirals Club lounge in Terminal E.

Managing Crowds With A Waitlist

While there is no waitlist during my visit, the American Express app (iOS | Android) does provide real-time updates on Centurion Lounge crowd levels, which can be helpful when deciding whether to stop by before a flight.

Unfortunately, there is no way to join a virtual waitlist or hold a spot in line through the app, a feature that is available at the Capital One Lounge at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)

Adding this capability would make the Centurion Lounge experience even smoother, especially during high-traffic periods.

Staff And Service (8/10)

Although I do not have many interactions with staff during my visit to the Amex Centurion Lounge DCA, every encounter I do have is friendly, professional, and welcoming.

The front desk agent greets me with a genuine smile, even at the early hour of the morning, and efficiently checks me in. As I prepare to leave, she wishes me a safe flight and says she hopes to see me again soon.

Half-asleep, I respond with a polite “Hope you have a great flight too,” which earns a knowing smile in return.

Throughout the lounge, staff members move quietly and efficiently, preparing the space for the day ahead. I appreciate their attentiveness and the calm energy they bring to the lounge. Even as they clear tables or restock food and drinks, they do so with care and consideration for travelers who are trying to relax or get some work done.

What stands out most to me is the sense of professionalism.

The team clearly understands that many guests are traveling early in the morning, and they maintain a peaceful atmosphere by avoiding unnecessary noise. No loud conversations, no carts clattering across the floor – just quiet, efficient service that makes the entire Centurion Lounge DCA experience feel more refined.

Final Thoughts

I often skip American Express Centurion Lounges because of crowding and inconsistent food, but the Amex Centurion Lounge DCA feels like a welcome improvement. The space is calm, elegant, and efficient, showing that American Express is investing in a better lounge experience.

Check-in is smooth, the staff are friendly, and the layout is well designed with distinct zones for dining, working, and relaxing. The Wi-Fi is reliable, and the restrooms are spotless. The lounge feels exceptionally clean and thoughtfully maintained throughout my visit.

The food and drinks are adequate but not exceptional. The buffet offers a solid breakfast, though options at the Capital One Landing nearby are noticeably higher quality. I hope to return later in the day to try the cocktail bar, which features a locally inspired menu.

Crowds will likely be the biggest variable. My early-morning visit is quiet, but peak hours may feel different. A virtual waitlist feature – like the one at the Capital One Lounge at Dulles – would be a valuable addition.

Overall, the Centurion Lounge DCA strikes a strong balance between comfort, style, and convenience. It may not be the most luxurious lounge in the Amex network, but it is one I am happy to revisit before a future flight.
